A new NBA 2K game is in sight, courtesy of 2K Games and Visual Concepts. And while the series’ preference for excessive monetization persists, a few new features and improvements deserve to be detailed. Let’s take a look at 16 things you need to know before taking NBA 2K23 into your own hands, which will be released on September 9 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
Cover Athletes
This year’s iteration features not one, not two, but four cover athletes. Six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan adorns the Championship Edition with his own Michael Jordan Edition. The Standard Edition and the Digital Deluxe edition have triple NBA All-Star Devin Booker. Finally, there is the WNBA edition with Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird, but it is only available exclusively on GameStop in the United States and Canada.
Jordan calls for return
With the return of Michael Jordan as a cover athlete, the NBA 2K11 Jordan Challenges are returning. The original 10 challenges, covering legendary moments from his time at the university, the USA Team and the NBA, have been rebuilt and five new challenges have been added. More details will follow, but various teammates and rivals will also make comments and appear in special vignettes to reflect on Jordan’s career.
MyCareer – the return of the city and the cruise
Another mode that requires more details is MyCareer. Long story short, the city is coming back for the Xbox Series X/s and PS5 versions, offering a whole new city to explore with new arenas and new locations. You can also choose a crew and action against MyPLAYER for supremacy. Previous generation versions (and, unfortunately, PCs) will again receive the cruise, participate in the courts of a cruise ship and collect rewards while making shore excursions. It’s described as a “daring basketball trip,” which involves pirates, but it’s best to wait for more information before you get your hopes up.
New Pro-Stick Combinations
For as much controversy as the NBA 2K series received for its microtransactions, the Gameplay was generally very solid. This year, things are significantly revised, starting with new Pro-Stick Combos. The slamming of the stick allows double throws and coils, as well as new controls for dosed skill Dunks. Players of the current generation also benefit from physics-based rim slopes, which allows them to control when and how long a player hangs on the edge after an immersion.
Adrenaline rush
Another new feature is the adrenaline rush, which appears in the form of three bars under a player’s endurance indicator. In an Explosive Sprint, a Boost is consumed and a player’s speed and acceleration decrease when they are all consumed. There are only three Boosts available for each possession, so it’s important to know the right time to use It.
Striking attributes
In addition to doubling the number of striking animations from previous games, NBA 2K23 also adds new striking attributes. These include firing speed (the speed at which a shot reaches the release point), release height (the height of a shot when released), defensive immunity (the performance of a shot in competitions against defenders) and temporal impact (where the firing windows are adjusted offers a greater penalty for poorly timed shots, but greater rewards for good Timing). Each signature jump has unique striking stats that add more strategy to striking situations.
New striking Knives
Last year’s revised striking display received mixed reactions from Fans. As a result, NBA 2K23 offers five meters of striking with another 15 Seasons to unlock after next year’s launch. Visual Concepts notes: “Each meter fills up to the end, which is your ideal release point, and then empties on the after side at the 2K17–2k20.”striking arcs are also used to indicate when a player arrives at the point too early, too after, or with his Timing. There is also the shot feedback which, when activated, delays the “timing/coverage overlay and green release animations until the ball hits the basket”, as the developer says, which should encourage the game through possessions.
AI Improvements
The AI has also been improved this year, ranging from a better understanding of the defenders’ positions to the confusion of driving tests. There is also a new signature AI strike system, where each star has a pack of four signature strike combinations, whether it is four sets of single moves or two sets of combined moves. As if that wasn’t enough, AI coaches are also smarter, now track efficiency through numerous metrics, perform pre-match match-up evaluations, and much more. You can even take out a top scorer who is not doing very well and rotate other options.
